Ms. Jhansilaxmi Hugar, participant of Project Swavalambane
(being implemented across Karnataka)under Lakhpati Didi Programme
Jhansilaxmi Hugar, comes from a rural, economically disadvantaged family. She
joined the Vishwaprerna Mahila SHG, with the goal of contributing to women's
empowerment. During SHG meetings and interactions with government officials,
Jhansilaxmi became aware of the health issues caused by the consumption of
refined oils. This inspired her to start a cold-pressed oil manufacturing unit in her
village, offering healthier edible oil options to promote good health. Today, her
unit produces a variety of cold-pressed oils, including groundnut oil, coconut oil,
and sunflower oil. She has been appreciated for the superior quality of her
products. Encouraged by this success, Jhansilaxmi expanded her business to
include the production of turmeric powder and organic jaggery. On March 11,
2024, she was honoured as one of the awardees from Karnataka under the
NRLM's Lakhpati Didi Programme and she received the award from Hon'ble Prime
Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.
This initiative has been launched by NSRCEL, the business incubator at the Indian
Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), in collaboration with Sanjeevini –
