The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) is a scheme launched
by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, in
November 2008, to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices to all
sections of the population. The study aimed at exploring the viability and impact of
Janaushadhi Kendras. The data survey was conducted with both customers and
retailers of Janaushadhi Kendras to have a holistic understanding of the
implementation and realization of the objectives of the scheme. 515 customers and
190 retailers across more than 16 states and 80 districts of the country, were included
in the survey.
Primary Revelations:
• The ownership of the janaushadhi Kendra's is held by individuals from various
social categories, including those from the general category 60 per cent, Other
Backward Classes 27 per cent, and Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST).
• Majority of the retailers started their JAK store from (2016-2022). The number is
still rising.
• Beneficiaries highlight affordability of medicine as the biggest reason for buying
generic medicine.
• More than 40 per cent customers declare that they buy generic medicine
frequently or at the time of need.
• Over 42 per cent of the customers confirm their
commitment to Janaushadhi Kendra and acknowledge it as
a highly favorable choice for purchasing medication to
address specific health concerns followed by 34 per cent
who are very committed.
• Over 85 per cent of the respondents express their support
for the continuation and expansion of this scheme beyond
its current scope.
• More than 63 per cent of the customers confirm they get
medicines recommended by doctors on time while as 36
per cent highlight delays
• Approximately 45 per cent of retailers engage in the
procurement of pharmaceuticals through online channels,
while 23 per cent opt for offline procurement methods.
• A significant proportion of 42 per cent retailers agree or
strongly agree that their income increased since the time
of starting.
• More than 85 per cent are satisfied with the business
model being followed by Jan aushadhi Kendra's.

Dr. Sunil Shukla, Director General along with Shri Pravir Krishna, IAS (Retd.), Senior
Advisor, EDII met Dr. Indra Hang Subba, Member of Parliament of Lok Sabha,
Sikkim to discuss entrepreneurship development in Sikkim.
2nd July, 2024: EDII and Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) signed an MoU
to jointly undertake entrepreneurship education, training and incubation initiatives for
students. The MoU was signed between Col. Pankaj Kumar Sinha, Secretary/Managing
Director, FDDI and Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Faculty, EDII. This collaboration sets the stage for
fostering innovative product design and advancements in crafting techniques.
