Purnima, from Arabaril, Assam, has always dreamed of being an entrepreneur. Growing up in farming family, she witnessed the difficulties farmers faced due to unpredictable weather and fluctuating market prices; she was driven to contribute to her family’s income and her community. She learned about EDII’s Mushroom Cultivation programme at a women’s self-help group (SHG) meeting. She enrolled in the 26-day Micro Skillpreneurship Development Training programme (MSDP), where she gained valuable skills and financial literacy.

Recognizing the potential of mushroom cultivation due to its low investment, minimal space, and growing demand, Purnima started her own mushroom business. Initially, she secured a ₹10,000 loan from her SHG Level Federation to establish a mushroom farm in her backyard using affordable materials. EDII mentors provided crucial support with business planning, loan access, market identification, and buyer connections. Purnima also participated in EDII workshops and networking events, which enhanced her skills and market reach. Despite these efforts, Purnima faced societal barriers and financial limitations.

Looking ahead, Purnima plans to diversify into value-added products such as mushroom pickles and dried mushrooms, expand through online sales and create a cooperative platform for mushroom farmers in her district. Her journey exemplifies resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, transforming a dream into a tangible reality.
