Pramila Naik has emerged as a notable rural women entrepreneur from a marginal community in the village of Mailijharan in Kashipur Block, Odisha. After her marriage, Pramila faced financial problems, which led her and her husband to migrate to Tamil Nadu for better income opportunities. She worked at a garment manufacturing unit for 8 months before returning to her village to take care of her family and child.
Pramila was good at tailoring and had always thought of owning her shop which could take orders for multiple varieties of garments. Somehow, due to lack of finance and the fear of failure, she could never take the plunge.
She heard about getting incubated and mentored by team Udyamee at the Rural Business Incubation Centre. With the help of the team, Pramila assessed the demand and viability of setting up a tailoring shop. The location of Mallijhran village offered a significant advantage for establishing a tailoring unit. Pramila overcame every hassle with a smile on her face because she was determined to succeed. Gaining people’s trust in her abilities was her biggest challenge and gradually she could establish herself.
Pramila is an inspiring rural woman entrepreneur. She expanded her work area to include fancy dresses and other clothing items as well. Her husband also joined her business to aid growth. She attained financial stability and took charge of her agricultural land, getting required resources to ensure cultivation on it.
Pramila’s growth plan involves developing a Matching Centre and selling certain items such as; handbags and cosmetics for women. She also intends to acquire an automated sewing machine and set up two manual sewing machines to provide training in dress designing to local girls.
