Tapan’s journey from growing up in an average middle-class family in Deoghar, Jharkhand, to becoming a successful entrepreneur is truly inspiring. Inspired by biographies of successful entrepreneurs, Tapan dreamed of becoming entrepreneurs. Despite limited exposure and resource, he worked hard to build confidence and develop a strong personality; He knew were essential for achieving his entrepreneurial ambitions.

After completing his Bachelor’s in Philosophy from Bhagalpur University, Tapan enrolled Post Graduate Diploma in Management of NGOs at EDII. Looking back, he recalls, ‘I joined EDII to earn a degree, but I gradually started getting hold of my identity. I came for a degree, but I received so much more – it strengthened my entrepreneurial resolve and significantly improved my personality.’

Eager to gain hands-on experience before starting his business, Tapan consulted EDII faculty and made a strategic decision to work in the field. He joined Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan (KNNA) after completing his course, where he worked for natural resource management, livelihood and agriculture.

Armed with this practical knowledge, Tapan teamed up with his brother Amit Ghosh and initiated Eco Cell in February 2008, a consulting and facilitation services for date cultivation to farmers in Kutch. The journey was challenging, but they overcame it with persistence and hard work.

Explaining one area in which he feels happy to have ventured, he says, “Government offered subsidy for promoting horticulture but farmers were unable to avail it as they were either unaware about it or found the application process too complex and time consuming. ECO Cell aimed to fulfil such gaps to facilitate farmers.”

Traditionally, farmers grow multiple crops like cotton and castor, with date palms along farm borders. Lacking market linkages, they often accept whatever price was offered for their produce. Eco Cell’s consulting cum facilitation services has enabled farmers in gaining good returns through exclusive date cultivation across their farm lands.

Now, Eco Cell is exploring different value added product of Date Palm like Coffee and Chocolate and by-products of date palm plants leaf fibre. Tapan’s entrepreneurial journey reflects his ability to turn challenges into opportunities, his commitment to knowledge-driven business practices, and his unwavering focus on empowering local farmers.
