Prithibhusan Deka, President of Gramya Vikash Mancha (GVM), has spearheaded transformative social initiatives across Assam, significantly impacting countless lives. Under his leadership, GVM has rescued 347 children from traffickers and vulnerable situations while significantly reducing school dropout rates in various districts. His efforts have also facilitated sustainable irrigation practices, benefiting thousands of hectares of agricultural land.
Prithibhusan Deka’s visionary leadership has also empowered thousands of women farmers, mitigated the trafficking of girls along the Indo-Bhutan border, and established critical infrastructure projects such as flood shelters and elevated platforms in flood-prone areas. Through his relentless dedication, he has improved livelihood opportunities for marginalized communities, supported flood-affected families, and revived traditional crafts like handloom weaving among tribal women.
Gramya Vikash Mancha was founded in 1999 during a period of militancy in Assam. Initially established as a youth club to support flood victims, the organization operated without formal knowledge of NGO practices. However, after joining EDII in 2001-02, Prithibhusan Deka gained valuable skills and knowledge essential for managing a nonprofit organization. This marked a turning point, accelerating GVM’s momentum under his leadership.
A first-generation social entrepreneur, Prithibhusan Deka has successfully established several nonprofit and for-profit organizations and his remarkable contributions have earned him numerous prestigious awards. Today, GVM is a well-known and respected social organization in Northeast India. Looking ahead, Prithibhusan Deka’s future vision includes expanding its activities to all states in the Northeast within the next decade.
Prithibhusan Deka’s journey is an inspiration to aspiring social entrepreneurs, demonstrating the power of education, dedication, and a deep commitment to serving others.
