Coming from a business family, for Sumit joining his family business was a natural choice. However, somewhere the desire to explore the multiple dynamics and the changing aspects of entrepreneurship kept nudging him. So, to strengthen his entrepreneurial skills, he joined EDII’s Post Graduate Programme in Management – Business Entrepreneurship. It is here that Sumit decided to add a new wing to his family business. Under the guidance of EDII mentors and his businessman-father, Sumit zeroed in on steel rolling mills. He says, “In identifying the business opportunity, my training at EDII was extremely helpful. Also, my father’s years of experience in Steel industry was a ready guide for me to fall back on.” Sumit prepared a detailed project report in the domain and tried to learn as much as possible.
Sumit even took up a job with an Ahmedabad-based company as a trainee to derive on-job training. Simultaneously, he got an opportunity to put his skills to test when he revived a steel plant. A year later Sumit set up his business His first order was from Saudi Arabia, where he exported hydraulic cylinders worth Rs. 50,000. He fulfilled the order but at a loss of Rs. 10,000. He shares, “I did not earn from this order; rather I spent my own money but I learnt a lot. My father encouraged me, saying that unless I soiled my hands, I would not learn anything.”
Today, Sumit serves as the Managing Director of Vinod International Ltd. Group of Companies. The Group specializes in consultancy, turnkey projects & manufacturing of refractories, mining equipment, metallurgical machinery and material handling systems. The group has successfully completed 200 turnkey projects across Saudi Arabia, Middle East, Gulf and African regions. Sumit has also founded the Socio-Economic Development Forum (SEDF), dedicated to supporting start-ups through mentoring and investment. Sumit has been honoured with the ‘CEO of the Year’ Award by the Indian Institute of Materials Management, for his achievements. He earned his Ph.D. in international business from Washington University in 2022.
Sumit explored different sectors and in 2023 he started Krevio Studios. Being Punjabi and deeply connected to Punjabi culture and music, the idea of contributing to the Punjabi music and entertainment industry felt natural. The studio collaborated with Punjabi artists and expanded into digital content by producing the OTT series and several Punjabi music projects. A true visionary and resilient entrepreneur, Sumit Grover continues to lead Vinod International Ltd. towards excellence, transforming it into a 100% export-oriented enterprise that delivers end-to-end solutions for the global steel and mining industries.
