Dr. V.G.Patel Memorial Lecture Series
EDII lost its founder Padma Shri Dr. V.G. Patel on April 4, 2019. To commemorate Dr. Patel’s great work in the field of entrepreneurship, the Institute started the annual lecture series in 2019. Recognised by the entrepreneurship fraternity as the ‘Pioneer of Entrepreneurship Movement,’ Dr. V.G. Patel devoted his life to propagate entrepreneurship within India and globally. Not only did he succeed in establishing the credibility of his belief across India, but also went on to establish the National Resource Institute, EDII, in 1983. Over the years, the Annual Lecture Series has witnessed discourses by eminent personalities.
1st Dr. V G Patel Memorial Lecture: Distinguished Speaker for the inaugural lecture was Shri Prabhat Kumar, Former Cabinet Secretary & Former First Governor of Jharkhand.
The topic was – ‘Entrepreneurship with an Ethical Twist’
“My hypothesis is that the ethical movement in our country has to start from Indian entrepreneurs. We cannot expect it from the multinational companies. We have seen Enron, Volkswagen, Johnsons’ and Johnsons’, and many others failing the test of ethics and social accountability. Therefore it is imperative for celebrated institutions like EDII to come forward and be in vanguard of ethical movement.”
– Shri Prabhat Kumar
2nd V.G.Patel Memorial Lecture (Virtual): Distinguished Speaker: Shri Acharya Devvrat, Hon’ble Governorshri of Gujarat and Guest of Honour, Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta, Founder, The Honey Bee Network, National Innovation Foundation and GIAN.
The topic of the lecture was – ‘Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Natural Farming.’
“Amidst all the talks about healthy living and environment protection, a branch of farming gaining prominence is Natural Farming. The primary reason it is gaining grounds across the world is that it causes minimal damage to the environment, promises healthy produce and good health. I believe it is important to educate our farmers on Natural Farming as a strategy that could help them ensure sustainable capitalization of agriculture. Gujarat has made commendable progress in farming and agriculture, with focus on natural farming.”
– Shri Acharya Devvrat
“Natural farming is an old age tradition but needs to be backed by extensive research for wider promotion and acceptance. There should be an all-India coordinated research project on participatory natural farming research. It is important to empower organic certification by network of organic farmers, jointly with official agencies, and all certifications can be uploaded on national website for peer scrutiny. Separate agro service Centres for herbal input need to be set up and children & youths should be oriented towards this. It is essential to escalate support to organic farmers and towards innovations in the area.”
– Prof. Anil Gupta

“Higher learning institutions can play a critical role in shaping student- mindset. They need to design and offer courses that are at the intersection of innovation, business skills and entrepreneurial mindset. It is important to equip students with knowledge on business skills and entrepreneurial competencies. Such a blend will escalate their confidence and knowledge, yielding in impact-making businesses. It is also desirable to expose students to business ideas and help them identify as to which ideas can primarily go through the incubation process. Such mentoring and hand-holding can ready the entrepreneurs for the incubation phase by providing the required skills and knowledge that help them validate and assess their ideas and define their business model vividly.”
– Anandiben Patel
“Gujarat is one of the first states to come up with Student Start-up Innovation Policy to spur the entrepreneurship at institutional level. We are also conducting two hackathons every year where participating students are encouraged to find solutions for important issues through their ideas. The state has created a conducive ecosystem by establishing a Gujarat Startup Innovation Hub, I-Hub, where startups are provided with networking, co-working, lab, mentorship, and funding facilities. In addition, the state is facilitating collaboration between government, industry and youth to address start-up concerns through innovative and sustainable solutions. Gujarat has also been at the forefront of promoting women entrepreneurship by starting women centric startup policies.”

The topic was ‘How to Determine Success for Entrepreneurs’.
“Be it in business or life, disciplining the mind to process every situation and outcome, is of utmost importance. Happiness and success are a state of mind, and no matter what the situation is, if the mind learns to act with objectivity, insight and wisdom, it will always devise ways to perceive situations of conflicts and failures in such a way that the state of happiness for the individual does not get affected. The goals we set and the choices we make should be well evaluated as an individual or an entrepreneur; and our 100 percent efforts must go in. Whatever are the results of our efforts, an emotionally mature and rational mind will always remain unaffected.”
– J.M. Vyas

He talked about Startup India and Atmanirbhar Bharat even before the ideas became popular. I give my best wishes to EDII for all their future initiatives.”

V.G. Patel Memorial Lecture- 6th in the series: Distinguished Speaker of the event was Shri Savjibhai Dholakia, Founder & Chairman Hari Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd.
The topic of the Lecture was ‘Entrepreneurs are the Pillars of Nation Building’.
“It is my honour to come and speak on this momentous occasion. Dr. Patel, a legendary figure, was a true visionary who not only introduced entrepreneurship to our nation but also instilled the values of independence & self-reliance through it. Only an accomplished entrepreneur could convince the sponsors in 1983 to set up an Entrepreneurship Institute. What a great achievement that was, and all that followed as a part of his work continued to create history. I think Dr. Patel’s attitude and skills are a learning for today’s entrepreneurs. He, in a way, sowed the seeds of Start Up India and Atmanirbhar Bharat that we talk about so proudly today. The youths who want to become entrepreneurs have to understand that hardwork and the strength to get up after every storm, is what makes entrepreneurs. If you are entering into the field to earn money alone, please stay away. Entrepreneurship is about resilience, strength of mind, countless hours of hard work, sleepless nights and a positive midset. Dr. V G Patel stood for all these entrepreneurial values. I am glad Dr. Shukla is carrying forward the legacy. My best wishes to EDII for all their future initiatives.”
– Shri Savjibhai Dholakia
