Strengthen the performance of family business in India through provision of knowledge and experience sharing.
Enhance the competitive strength, expansion, diversification and modernisation prospects of family business.
Building on the knowledge that EDII already possesses on family business dynamics, continuos research will be undertaken on succession planning, transition management governance issues, dispute resolution etc. Case studies and stories will also be developed to engage effectively with family business owners in trainings, counselling sessions and workshops.
These training and/or counselling or allied programmes of three to five days, will train/counsel owners on identifying future leaders, establishing a decision making & a conflict resolution process and establish a formal succession plan.
There are family businesses where the father-daughter or husband-wife duo occupy the centre stage. Women are part-owners and active managers in such family businesses. The Centre intends to offer programmes/forms of engagement focussed specially on women owners who are active managers in family business.
Within the Centre, EDII intends to establish a cell to counsel/guide family business owners who participated in the Institute’s programmes. The cell will respond to queries which may be posed by such owners. If they need intensive support, this will be provided through quasi-consultancy mechanism. The cell will draw from real-life experts and family business owners so that its contribution makes genuine difference to the working of family business.
The ‘rules of the game’ or constitution (guiding principles) for a family business is a dire need. There is also a legal dimension of family business ownership and operation. The family business owner fraternity would welcome a publication, worded in a simple language, in this respect. The modalities for entry/exit of family business owners, when it is a siblings or dynasty owned enterprise, is a real issue.
The guidelines/norms/best practices on the above areas will be useful publications. There are many subjects/ themes on which publications targeted at family business owners are needed. The Centre will endeavour to meet this need.
The Institute, in order to enrich its track-record in the family business-engagement area, would undertake essential work relevant to the academic fraternity and policy-making networks. There are important themes on which academic work needs to be undertaken. The Institute will organise necessary research and publications on such themes.
