Sanjay Pawar, a second-generation weaver, carries forward his family’s 40-year handloom legacy, specializing in sarees, dress materials, and Dupattas. He began his journey with pre-loom activities such as pirn winding, loom tagging, and warp filling. After completing his schooling, he dedicated himself fully to weaving to support his family.
Sanjay came to know about the Project Hand Made in India (HMI) in Maheshwar through weavers he met at Handloom Awareness Programme at Ahilya Vihar. He was eager to explore innovative ways to secure suitable place in the competitive market.
Sanjay actively participated in various training programmes including design development, product diversification, and digital marketing, empowered him to sell products directly to consumers. After consulting with HMI team, he introduced shirting handloom fabric with fine cotton yarn. This versatile and comfortable fabric is used for shirts, kurtas and other garments. Leveraging his skills and opportunities, he showcased his products at mega exhibitions, establishing himself as a prominent trader in handloom industry.
With an initially investment 2.4 lakhs, Sanjay started his business. Through his skills and ability to seize opportunities, he expanded his handloom business globally, reaching markets in Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore and across India with the support of EDII – HMI team. He has also employed eight fellow weavers and now plans to scale his business by increasing the looms, produce shirting fabrics and creating further opportunities for more weavers.
